Kulim, 18 December – XSD International Paper Sdn. Bhd. reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to education, community well-being, and environmental sustainability through the successful organisation of the Tabika KEMAS Graduation Ceremony and the third consecutive Fish Release Programme at Sungai Karangan.
The programme was carried out with the participation of the State Assembly Member for Merbau Pulas, the Department of Environment (DOE) Kulim Branch, Lembaga Sumber Air Kedah (LSANK), Majlis Perbandaran Kulim Kedah (MPKK), and the Majlis Ketua Kampung (MKK) Kedah of Kampung Padang Meiha, with support from the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Kedah and Tabika KEMAS.
The combined initiatives celebrated early childhood education milestones while strengthening environmental conservation efforts, reflecting XSD’s continued alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
Celebrating Early Education: Supporting Children and Families
The Tabika KEMAS Graduation Ceremony involved two preschools — Tabika KEMAS Kampung Padang Meiha and Tabika KEMAS Taman Desa Aman. A total of 35 students participated in the programme, with 13 six-year-old children completing their preschool education and preparing to enter Primary School (Year 1).
To further support the children and their families, school bags and stationery sets were presented to all 35 students. In addition, the 13 graduating students received school uniform vouchers to assist parents in managing education-related expenses as their children transition into formal primary education.
The ceremony marked an important milestone in the children’s educational journey, recognising both academic readiness and the social and developmental foundations built through early childhood education. This initiative reflects XSD’s ongoing support for SDG 4: Quality Education, promoting inclusive and equitable access to learning at the community level.
Protecting the Environment: Sustaining River Ecosystems and Livelihoods
As part of XSD’s ongoing environmental stewardship efforts, the Fish Release Programme was conducted at Sungai Karangan for the third consecutive year. This year’s programme saw the release of 35,000 native freshwater fish fingerlings, comprising 30,000 Lampam fish and 5,000 Baung fish, with a total estimated value of RM7,000.
Both Lampam and Baung play an important role in maintaining river biodiversity and ecosystem balance. Their release contributes to the long-term health of the river system while supporting downstream fishing activities, which remain an important source of livelihood for local fishermen along Sungai Karangan and Sungai Muda.
This initiative, implemented with technical guidance from the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Kedah, directly supports SDG 14: Life Below Water, while also contributing to SDG 1: No Poverty by strengthening natural resources that underpin local livelihoods.
Driving ESG Commitments Through Long-Term Initiatives
Both programmes form part of XSD’s broader commitment to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its business operations. The initiatives demonstrate the Company’s approach to balancing industrial development with environmental protection and meaningful community engagement. The successful implementation was made possible through close collaboration with government agencies, local authorities, educational institutions, and community representatives, reflecting the spirit of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Moving forward, XSD remains committed to continuing and strengthening similar initiatives, reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate citizen while contributing positively to community development and environmental sustainability.
